Koh Pha Ngan, from calm to rapture

The island of Pha Ngan is located in the Gulf of Thailand, in front of  Koh Samui and not very far from Koh Tao.

Koh Pha Ngan is a peaceful place but one which also hosts a world-famous electronic music event: the Full Moon Party, which is also repeated when it is halfway, that is, the Half Moon Party.

The continental platform surrounding the island is shallow once it submerges into the sea so that the swimming area near to the island is very calm.

You can reach the island by bus or train + ferry from Bangkok to the nearest ports (Chumpon or Surat Thani), as well as by plane to the nearest airports (Koh Samui or Surat Thani) and then take a ferry.

Koh Samui airport is operated by Bangkok airways, a boutique airline. The Surat Thani airport admits flights from low-cost companies.

If you travel via Chumphon, keep in mind that the sea trip will be longer, so during the monsoon season we suggest the shortest ferry distance, that is, through Surat Thani.

There is a curious paradox in recommending this sun and sand destination to different types of visitors: the island is ideal for those seeking absolute peace and quiet but, at the same time, it is also perfect for party-goers who will be blown away by one of the most vibrant, amazing electronic music venues on the international scene – the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin beach.

So, the two types of travellers have their space on the island. The former can head towards the island’s northern shores, and the latter should go south, ensuring that their stay coincides with this phase in the lunar calendar.

The Haad Rin beach on the southern-most tip of the island has an east-facing position, what means that those who decide to stay awake until dawn, around 5h30 am, can experience the magic of watching the sunrise above the horizon.

Koh Phangan forms part of the province of Surat Thani and has a total surface area of approximately 168 km2 (104 sq miles), with a population of over 13,000 inhabitants.

The inhabited part of the island lies mainly along the western coast, and consequently, this is where the most popular beaches are located.
Koh Pha Ngan’s main economic activities are tourism and fishing. The island offers visitors romantic beaches and picturesque villages.

It is a place of peace and calm, ideal for enjoying long walks and beautiful sunsets.

The island’s size and roads imply that it is ideal to explore by motorcycle. It is the best option provided that you bear in mind the dangers involved, and take into account that these can often be even greater due to the alcohol consumed at party venues.
