First of all, if your stay will be 2 or 3 or someday more, you have to take into account how you are going to get around the city.
If you are going to do so by taxi, tuk-tuk or with a private vehicle, the only recommendation is that the hotel is not far from the tourist areas shown on the map.
In the case of using the collective public transport, which is highly recommended, besides it should be located as close as possible to the MRT subway network, BTS Skytrain or the piers on the Chao Phraya River (see Getting around Bangkok, enjoythailand.fun).
Traffic in Bangkok is not fluid and the warm humid weather penalizes the effort of outdoor transfers, especially in the central hours of the day.
For a one night trip, bear in mind the airport where you will arrive and depart from the city, and the sites to visit during your quick visit. Depending on your schedule, it will have to be close to the airport or to the area where you will spend your time.
In Bangkok, think about the possibility of coming back to the hotel at noon, to enjoy a repairing nap or just recover in the swimming pool or play in the room with air conditioning for a while. In case you think it’s a good idea, keep this in mind when choosing your hotel, this is the right time.
» Khaosan Road
The most popular budget accommodation area in Bangkok is Khaosan Road, in the historic district of Rattanakosin.
Apart from the price, it has in favour that you will find travel agencies, restaurants, markets and other useful services for those who travel by themselves.
Note that it is located near the Grand Palace but away from downtown, which can be a handicap on a short visit.
If you are interested, check out the specific Khaosan Road post.
» Siam District
A commercial area where hotels are not abundant, usually luxurious.
» Sukhumvit District
Basically, a lively nightlife. On the main avenue and in the succession of perpendicular streets there are many hotels of all categories.
Interesting for those looking for a unique hotel in a genuinely Chinese environment. In this case, it allows me to suggest the Shanghai Mansion hotel, very authentic and exotic. Here you have a post.
» Silom – Riverside
Some of the most luxurious hotels in the city are located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, such as the Sangri-la and the Mandarin Oriental.
Silom is full of hotels and small guesthouses with very affordable prices.
Where to lodge in Chiang Mai?
The shaded area is the one we suggest if your intention is to move around the city centre on foot.
If you are going to move with your own vehicle or using public transport, then it does not matter if you are a little further away.
The best accommodation area in Chiang Rai
The city centre is quite small, so if the idea is to walk without renting any vehicle, then it is better to reserve the accommodation within the shaded area.
Keep in mind that the Blue and the White temples or the Black houses are located on the outskirts of Chiang Rai, so you cannot go walking.
